I recently had to watch Pink Floyd: The Wall for my Literature into Film class. I had never seen it before, and all that I knew about the film is that it was strange, like, stranger than a lot of other movies. I had grown up with Pink Floyd, my Dad listened it them, and his Dad as well. I knew the big hits from this album, Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2, Comfortably Numb, Young Lust, and overall I considered myself to be a Pink Floyd enjoyer. But something about me changed after watching this movie: I cannot stop listening to this album and thinking about the movie. Something about the movie really drew me in. I was fully expecting to it to be a slog and I would zone out while watching, but I found myself taking in every moment with my eyes glued to my tv for the next hour and forty minutes. First of all, it’s a technical wonder. The things they did in this movie with the sets, the actors/characters, and the camera work, I just couldn’t fathom the amount of time and effort they had to put into this film to get it to where it ended. The use of the music puts it in a whole next context as well, and introduced me to some new songs that I really like such as In the Flesh, Run Like Hell, and One of My Turns. The story is very loose and not explained at all through the little dialogue that exists in the film, but I was absolutely captivated and I actually liked that I didn’t know exactly what was happening. The animation is also something to gawk at, the imagery is absolutely astounding. It has been 4 days at the time of this post since I finished the movie, and I can’t stop thinking about The Wall.
